The title of the One Night Only which occured on 14 Nov 2025 was Plain Fancy. This year I chose the video elective as I wanted to get a good grasp of the history and process of making video art. Our lecturer, Urich Lau, is a well known video artist and I was privileged to come under his tutelage.
The video I created is titled Under The Surface. It ws inspired by a drowning incident of a 3 year old child in 2011 at the Bedok Reservoir in Singapore where I live. His body was found along side his mother’s and it was classified as suicide. It’s a sad story but one which I felt deserved to be told.
A speculative journey follows an innocent spirit along the edges of Bedok Reservoir, searching for refuge from the chaos and cacophony of an accelerated, overstimulated world. Through a lens of curiosity and wonder, the reservoir emerges as both a site of crisis and a sanctuary of rest—a threshold where life and death, absence and presence, mere survival and mindful being converge. The film reflects on the tensions of contemporary life and the relentless struggle to survive, and invites viewers to consider the resonance of space, time, nature, and the human experience.
